Abraham
Lincoln is reputed to have said, "The lawyer should always
get some of his fee in advance from the client. This way the client
knows he has a lawyer and the lawyer knows he has a client."
We realize
that the need for legal services is something that is usually unforeseen
and unplanned and may create a hardship. We make it a policy to keep
fees and expenses for our clients as low as possible, without compromising
the legal representation you need. Fear of legal fees should not preclude
you from receiving the quality of services your deserve.
How
to save on Legal Fees
There
are a number of ways you can cooperate with your Attorney to reduce
your costs. The following suggestions are not intended to be a comprehensive
list, and are not arranged in any particular order:
- Deal
with the office staff whenever possible. We bill for Paralegal's time,
but you will not be billed the same hourly rate charged by your attorney.
Paralegals have special training and in many cases, a great deal of
experience, and will often be able to help you.
- Keep
a diary and write down legal questions as they arise. By making one
phone call with five questions as opposed to five phone calls, you
can obviously save money.
- Always
read what is sent to you in the mail. If you receive something from
your attorney's office, please read it and respond if requested to
do so. If you receive any other correspondence regarding your case,
from any source other than your attorney, notify your attorney's office
immediately. It may be legal documents which need to be responded
to within a certain period of time.
- Provide
information promptly when requested. By requiring us to "nag"
you to complete time sensitive projects, you will incur unnecessary
costs.
- Try
to work out routine matters such as the division of personal property
directly with your spouse if possible. Spending expensive attorney
time to divide the tupperware is not cost effective.
- Do not
simply show up at your attorney's office, expecting to see your lawyer
or other staff member, review your paperwork, or even pay your bill.
Law offices are busy places, and they need to schedule client appointments
to avoid haste on the part of the office staff, as well as delay and
frustration for the client or visitor.
- If you
have made an appointment which you can no longer keep, you should
notify your attorney's office as soon as possible. It is our policy
to bill for scheduled appointment unless we are notified at least
12 hours in advance. Remember, an appointment scheduled for you is
time which could have been scheduled for someone else.
- Whenever
possible, we will request that you do some of the "leg work"
necessary for your case. We do this to save YOU money. It is important
to remember, that time spent on your case by your attorney or paralegal
is billable time. By having you run some of the errands or do some
of the leg work, we can greatly reduce the costs to you.
